# AI Bubble - Ponzi Finance Stage Fritzell's claim: AI capex now runs on new equity and new debt, not on cash flow. In [[Minsky Financing Stages|Minsky's]] terms, that is Ponzi finance.^[From [[Key Themes in Asia - Fritzell Oct 2026]], slides 14-25] ## The evidence - **Scale.** AI capex is the largest buildout in US history. It runs ~3.5% of GDP for 2025-2032. Railroads peaked near 2.2%. - **Capex.** Consensus hyperscaler capex: ~US$780bn for 2026, ~US$1.1tn for 2027. - **Cash flow.** Next-12-month hyperscaler free cash flow fell from ~US$290bn to near zero in 2026. - **Equity.** US non-financial net equity issuance turned to about +US$150bn in 2026. Companies now issue more stock than they buy back. It is the largest figure since at least 2000. - **Debt.** Hyperscaler bond issuance hit ~US$230bn by Sep 2026. It was ~US$110bn in 2025 and ~US$20bn in 2023. - **Crowding.** 53% of fund managers name "long global semiconductors" as the most crowded trade. ## Where Asia carries the risk - **Taiwan.** TSMC capex: US$41bn (2025), US$60-64bn (2026E), US$80-85bn (2027F). Electronics are 85% of the Taiwan market. - **Korea.** Margin loans rose from ~17tn won (early 2025) to ~38tn won (Jun 2026). Most of it sits in a few names, mainly SK Hynix. Retail mania reaches children. - **Memory.** Consensus net profit for Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron: US$790bn (2027), US$848bn (2028). ## The dependency chain ```mermaid flowchart TB LAB["Anthropic + OpenAI
~US$127bn revenue run-rate"] --> HYP["Hyperscaler capex
~US$1.1tn in 2027"] HYP --> FCF["Free cash flow ~0"] FCF --> FUND["Funded by new debt
and new equity"] HYP --> TSMC["TSMC capex
Taiwan market"] HYP --> MEM["Memory profits
Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron"] MEM --> MARGIN["Korean margin debt
in SK Hynix"] LAB -. That is small against ~US$1tn per year of capex. ## Links to my views - Same pattern as [[AI Capex Super-Cycle]]: individually rational, collectively irrational. - Valuation context: [[Sep 25 Market Gauge]], [[Stock Market Bubbles]]. - Hardware exposure: [[HBM]], [[Hyperscalers]], [[The infrastructure layer and AI capex]]. ---- tags: #boat #investing #ai #semiconductors links: [[Asia Macro MOC]] [[Minsky Financing Stages]] [[AI Capex Super-Cycle]] [[Hyperscalers]]
