# Data Residency in the GCC
## Six states mean six rule sets
The Gulf has no single data protection law. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait each have their own framework. Free zones add more regimes. A regional rollout is six decisions, not one (2026 sources).
> [!important] Residency is not a blanket ban
> One source says Saudi personal data can leave the country in some cases. Transfer rules and sector rules apply. A cloud region in a nearby state does not always satisfy the rule.
## Why it matters
Local hosting, local keys and local audit are a real buying reason in this region. They also raise cost, because each country needs its own set-up. A vendor that says "regional" must show which country, which facility and which key owner.
> [!warning] Claim check
> A list of regulator names on a website is not proof of compliance. Ask for audit reports and certificates.
