# Framework Computer
A laptop company that lets people own, repair and upgrade their computer. It gives the means of computation back to the user.
- Mission: "Remaking consumer electronics to respect people and the planet."^[https://github.com/frameworkcomputer]
- The company has a reason to exist beyond "cool" or "more". Most consumer electronics brands do not. See [[What's your mission]].
- Founded by Nirav Patel in San Francisco. First laptop shipped in 2021.
## Why it matters
- **Evergreen hardware.** You upgrade one part, not the whole machine.
- New mainboards fit old Laptop 13 chassis. An old mainboard can live on as a home server.
- Expansion Cards swap ports in seconds (USB-C, HDMI, storage).
- Laptop 16 adds a swappable Expansion Bay (for GPUs) and hot-swap input modules.
- **Repair is the default.** Every part has a QR code and a guide. Parts sell on the Framework Marketplace.
- **Open hardware.** 112 public repos.^[https://github.com/frameworkcomputer]
- Expansion Card CAD and reference designs. Anyone can design and build a card.
- Mainboard docs and CAD for Laptop 12, 13, 16 and Desktop. Desktop includes printable mechanical parts.
- Embedded Controller firmware is open. Coreboot work is public.
- Pattern: give away the interface, sell the core product. See [[Open source is often misunderstood]].
## E-waste facts
- The world made 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022.^[Global E-waste Monitor 2024, UNITAR/ITU]
- That is about 7.8 kg per person per year.
- Only 22.3% was formally collected and recycled.
- E-waste grows ~2.6 Mt a year. The forecast is 82 Mt by 2030.
- Modular, repairable devices attack the root cause: short device lives.
