Oxygen from moon dust.
Useful for:
- lunar settlers
- regular, local production of rocket fuel
### Process
- lunar regolith
- = unconsolidated rocky material covering bedrock on the moon
- made up of 40–45% percent oxygen by weight, its single most abundant element
- oxygen is bound up by oxides, in the form of minerals or glass so in unavailable for immediate use
### Oxygen from moon dust
- A plant to extract the oxygen from the regolith through a molten salt electrolysis method
- Same method is used today by UK company [[Metalysis]] for commercial metal and alloy production
- Research being conducted to reduce the operating temperature, such that an oxygen production plant can be taken to function on the moon.
