# Traceability and the LoRa Concept ## The claim The industry lacks traceability from **tree to refinery**, and that absence blocks both compliance and investor confidence. ## Current state, observed FFB tracking today is **a smartphone, a receipt printer and a plastic bag under the fruit** — in an environment that destroys paper and electronics. Records are handwritten in the field and re-keyed in the office. ## The concept Roughly **US$10 solar-powered LoRa chips** forming an off-grid mesh network, tagging every palm at the base, tying fruit bunches back to individual trees, and capturing harvest events across the 25-year lifecycle. Scoped in conversation with an operator on 17 July. > [!warning] The objection that survived the room > Aquainus challenged how a chip detects an *actual event*: **someone still has to tap or confirm**, and sensor-rich chips break the unit economics. That objection is the reason traceability sits at **turn three or four** of [[Rimau/The Flywheel and Rimau Sentient|the flywheel]], not turn one — and why the open question is "who taps what, when, and what breaks in the rain." ## The strategic insight **Traceability enforced from the refinery level down is more adoptable**, because it follows the money and the end buyer. Pushing it up from the plot is fighting gravity; pulling it down from the buyer is not. ## Why it becomes mandatory All the compliance evidence gathered to date is MSPO-specific. **EUDR** is what converts this pillar from optional to regulation-driven, by making geolocation-level traceability mandatory for EU-bound palm. EUDR readiness is the next piece of ground discovery — and the deck treats it as upside, not the plan, because it has slipped before. MSPO already touches this: Principle 2 (Transparency) includes a traceability criterion.
