# Workforce and the Social Layer
The part of the discovery that constrains the product more than it enables it.
## Who actually works the estate
- Labour at target estates is **largely undocumented** — around 80 per cent at one Sabah company.
- Historically Indonesian, now mostly **Filipino**, and they arrive **as families**.
- Government schools do not accept their children; larger estates run community learning centres.
## The mechanisation tension
Families cannot survive on a single income, so removing manual roles carries social costs the owners **actively weigh**. This is not an abstract ESG concern — it is a live objection an estate owner will raise in a sales conversation.
> [!important] The doctrine it produced
> Autonomy of paperwork and monitoring, **not** autonomy that removes people. *People run the field. The platform runs the filing.*
## Institutional knowledge as a failure point
Knowledge lives in individuals who may not share a language with management, and who cannot communicate their own importance upward. Both [[Rimau/The Silver Wave and Succession|succession]] and PE diligence break on exactly this. It is the human argument for [[Rimau/The Flywheel and Rimau Sentient|the organisational map]]: *down to why a specific worker matters.*
## Security — the recurring, under-quantified pain
> [!quote] From the weekly meeting, 15 July
> "Security was like... I highlight that a few times... always, every single time" — including workers being accused of sabotage.
- **Worker safety** in remote acreage is the genuine welfare case for monitoring: heat stroke and snake bites deep in the estate where help cannot reach. *"If you get bit by a cobra and you are in acre number fifty..."*
- **Night security** today is one manual watchman who cannot cover fifty acres. The team scoped pager-style alerting under a central management system.
**Strength: moderate.** The pain is documented but discovery is thinner than the other pillars. Action: gather specific incident data — theft frequency, losses, insurance treatment — in the next estate visits.
## Recording ethics
The team flagged its own discomfort with recording conversations and asking sensitive questions on site. **Consent design is an open issue for any data-capture product**, and the ethical and legal framework must be decided *before* any wearable pilot — which is precisely why wearables are out of MVP scope.
