# USLM Investment Thesis
USLM is a local monopoly in Texas lime that the market prices like a commodity producer.^[Colubeat Investment Desk, "United States Lime & Minerals", 28 May 2026, https://colubeatid.substack.com/p/united-states-lime-and-minerals-inc]
## The claim
- Lime is a commodity chemically. It is not a commodity economically.
- Lime is heavy and cheap per ton. Freight sets the market edge. See [[Transport-Cost Moat]].
- Near Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), a new kiln is very hard to permit. See [[DFW Kiln Permitting]].
- So USLM's main plant has few rivals inside its delivery radius. It sets price, within limits.
## Evidence, graded
| Pillar | Evidence | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing power | Gross margin rose from 29.8% (2022) to 48.9% (2025). Prices rose 21.1% in 2023. | Strong. Shows in filings. |
| Scarce, pure rock | 223M tons of reserves at ≥96% calcium carbonate. ~47 years at 2025 output. | Strong. SEC reserve disclosure. |
| Permit barrier | DFW is a severe ozone nonattainment zone. No new DFW lime kiln in decades. | Medium. Claim from the author. Not checked. |
| No local rival | Lhoist, Graymont, Carmeuse "lack meaningful presence" in core Texas. | **Weak.** See [[USLM Open Questions]]. |
| Growth | New vertical kiln. Data centers, fabs, Texas highway budget. | Medium. Kiln is late. See [[USLM Energy and the Vertical Kiln]]. |
## What must be true
1. Customers inside the radius have no cheaper delivered option.
2. Lime stays a small share of the customer's project cost, so they do not fight on price.
3. Texas Lime keeps running. One plant carries most of the profit. See [[Texas Lime Concentration Risk]].
4. The family owners do not waste the cash pile. See [[USLM Family Control and Cash]].
> [!warning] Margin peak
> 48.9% may be the high. Q2 and Q3 2026 gross margin fell to ~47%, and price rises slowed to 2.5%. See [[USLM Valuation]].
